Slaves and Sons

Wednesday, Dec. 17

Patience. I’m getting there. OK, we are called to a particular ministry. What will stir you to grab the opportunity and run with it? The Bible indicates that there are several options. At conversion, we are freed from the bondage of sin and Satan and have transferred our allegiance to Christ. We are now slaves to Christ. A slave simply does what he’s told. A servant serves with no salary, tip or other amenities. Another analogy is being a soldier, which also carries the idea of obedience, doing what one is told. And then Jesus told His disciples that they were no longer considered servants, but friends (John 15:15). The N.T. also talks about joining the family of God, first as children under a tutor to be trained, and then as sons, being joint partners with Christ. So what we have is a dichotomy. It’s like the two sides of a coin. Each side is a part of the coin, yet different. So there is truth in being commanded to do something and going ahead and doing it. And there is significance in having a love for God and for Christ a la Piper that causes us to accept what we are called to do. The bottom line is that we accept the job and run with it.
