The Bible has a lot to say about love. If you want a key verse, it might be John 3:16. The Bible doesn’t mince words. It tells it like it is. Much of it is the account of things gone awry and the rest of it is what God is doing about it. So the Bible is quite explicit about murder, rape, sexual abuse, deceit, idolatry, etc. Remember that love is the bottom line, whether a right kind of love or the wrong kind. David loved God so much that God richly blessed him and his descendants. But he loved another man’s wife and committed murder and adultery to get what he wanted. He also loved a wayward son to the point of personal and national disaster. Then we have Pharaoh, the Assyrians and Babylonians, Jezebel, Haman, Herod, Caesar Augustus, and others that make David look like a saint. All this to prepare the way for the Messiah, God Himself, a God of love, who volunteered to solve the problem by paying for the sin of the whole human race. So while human love has been a disaster, God’s love has not. His love will prevail. His love will achieve all that He planned it to be. He will have complete victory because of His love. Before I deal with the nature of Biblical love, I want to deal with what it is not. Tune in tomorrow.
