Piper says there are three ways for the Christian to “kill” sin. One. Eph. 6 speaks of putting on the armor or God. All the pieces of armor except for one is for defense. The only one that is designed to kill is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Jesus used Scripture to rebuke Satan while under temptation in the desert. Mt. 4:1-11. Two. Gal. 3:5. Believe what God says. It’s not enough to know what God says. We need to act on it. Failure to act means that we don’t really believe. Three. 2 Thes. 2:13. Sanctification. The first two—knowing the Word and believing the Word—lead to sanctification, the process of becoming holy. Holiness is living free of sin. In other words, sin is put to death. To summarize this, we are to know the Word, we are to believe the Word, and by doing that, we become godly or holy. Our life style becomes progressively free from sin. That’s killing sin.
