Ambassadors and Travel Agents

Thursday, June 4

Living as ambassadors in a foreign country can be dangerous. Remember the U.S. embassy massacre a year or so ago in Benghazi, Libya. The O.T. ambassadors listed in Hebrews 11 understood this and were willing to pay the price. And so it is with those who are being beheaded for their faith in Iraq and Syria. As Jim Elliot said “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” That puts it in perfect perspective. Going back to the statement about being too heavenly minded—C.S. Lewis said “If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did the most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next.” If we really believe all that God has revealed about heaven, then we would naturally want all our friends to know about it and get there, too. In that sense, we are travel agents as well as ambassadors. By the way, the trip is free. Someone else paid for your ticket.
