As one of three elders in our church, I have an awesome responsibility. Heb. 13:17 says that I am accountable. It doesn’t say to whom, but it probably is to the entire church, and, more importantly, to God. That’s why it’s awesome. And that’s why I don’t take it lightly. But it’s a two way street. Members of the church need to obey their elders. And that’s another reason why it’s awesome. I’d better be right in teaching and giving advice. If not, I’m leading someone in the wrong direction—and will be accountable for it. With the understanding that the teaching, admonition, guiding, and correcting is done correctly, the results depend on the follower. “Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.” Obedience brings joy to the leader, and it is profitable for the follower. John says in 3 John 4: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” I agree.
