A 3 x 5 Card

Monday, May 15

I stayed up late recently to watch the Mariners lose in the 13th inning.  Elizabeth couldn’t stay awake that long, so went to bed and was sound asleep when I went to bed at 12:30.  But there on my pillow was a 3 x 5 card with the words “I love you.”  You might guess that it made me forget the baseball game.  I decided not to wake her up to tell her how much I appreciated that note.  It would have been counter productive.  When I woke up the next morning, I continued to marvel at how blessed I was.  I didn’t want this to just fade away.  So I decided to use the card for a “book mark” in my diary.  That will remind me every day of how blessed I am.  Then I began to think how apropos that was in light of God’s love for me.  I’ve always been awed by the fact that I, with all my limitations and faults could be loved as I have been loved, but this is dwarfed by comparison to God’s love for me.  It’s a good analogy of God’s love—but on a vastly larger scale.  Here is my creator, the eternal God, infinitely holy, loving a rebellious sinner, who had nothing to offer him.  I remembered how Jesus was so in love with his disciples that he said he was going to go to prepare a place for them so that he would have them around him for all eternity.  And now I’m included!  My intent here is not to minimize my wife’s love for me, but to maximize God’s love for me.  Putting this note in my diary was a picture of making our love the center of our earthly lives—day after day.  The Bible is God’s love letter to us.  So in the same way, God’s Word is the center of our spiritual lives, not only in this life, but in all eternity future.  The Bible should be a daily reminder of God’s love.  I adore my wife and am grateful that our lives together honor God.  Her little note encourages me to read his love note to me every day and cause me to adore him more.
